Games at Work

Okay, inspired by the pub yesterday I created a game to play today at work.

We have a 120' hallway here and a Super Ball that's been sitting inactive
on my desk for years.

Together you have everything you need for the newly christened Hall Ball.

The object is easy enough, throw the ball down the length of the hallway
without touching a wall.

A clean trip scores you a point. First to 5 wins the set but you must win
by 2 points.

First to claim 2 sets wins the match.

The game started out as a singles game but apparently we are good
ambassadors for Hall Ball as we started to get quite a few spectators
gathering in the doorways and even playing the roles of Hall Ball referees
and making calls on close wall skims.

By the time we were ready to start a second match we had so many players
wanting to join in we created Team Hall Ball with a 4 against 4 match.

Fun was had all around.

I've already had people come in inquiring about the game, the ball used,
and offering technique tips.

We still have a few official rulings to make regarding what type of throws
will be allowed and such but I figure we are well on our way to this
becoming an Olympic event.

I'm guessing the thrower is at one end and the object is to hit something
at the opposite end of the hall?

Do the ceiling and floor count as walls?

Throwers are on opposite ends of the hall. There are perpendicular hallways
at both ends so there is plenty of room for the teams. Where the hallways
meet also played the part of the foul line that you could not step pass in
your delivery.

Do the ceiling and floor count as walls?
Ceiling yes (also have to be careful of the hanging exit signs), floor no.
It would take one wild ass throw on a rope to make that distance without
bouncing. There in lies the trick as anyone who remembers a Super Ball they
are very "grippy" and you had to throw a pretty flat ball as any spin
tending to veer the thing into a wall.

What about rolling it? Would that count?

We allowed it as that was the preferred method for the women players, but I
think future games will require an overhand delivery to keep in the spirit
of a more lively game. A rolled ball just doesn't have the same excitement
as a bouncing projectile.

I would agree, but rolling is the first thing I thought of when you
explained it.

Are there any doorways along this 120 foot corridor? What's the official
ruling if the ball caroms off of Joe-from-accounting's noggin as he sticks
his head into the hallway to investigate the hub-bub?

(I say extra points).

...who wishes his company endorsed games; alas they're had to play when the
thumb screws are ratcheted on so tightly...

Many. Yes, we had errant throws end up slinging into offices. When
suggesting the game I was well aware that the people I would most consider
likely to file a complaint happened to be out on calls for the day.

That never came up, so an official ruling still has not been rendered. Most
investigated and then started becoming cheering sections and asking to be
drafted into the next match. Turns out to be one of those things that you
wouldn't think would be that hard until you try. That darn ball doesn't
lose much velocity on the trip either.

I can see how you would think that, but it's true. If you recall, these
things are very bouncy. In an office environment they can be pretty darn
destructive. We do have a rather large cavernous shop area that I've often
toyed with the idea of letting it fly back there and seeing how much damage
it could do.

You can't just heave it at someone yelling "Think fast!" as a miss could
create a lot of pain (the darn things are like slightly rubberized rocks)
or the aforementioned office destruction.

So the thing really has been just sitting on my desk with the occasional
one bounce catch off the floor. Until today...
