QP: Cartoons

At a gaming session on Friday night, I met someone who grew up in
the same town that I grew up in. It was quite odd, as most people
have never even heard of this town. (Saco, Maine, for those
inquiring minds). He was 4 years behind me in school, so we'd never
met, but he used to hang out with a lot of the people I knew from
school. So, we reminisced a bit, and I asked him about this cartoon
I had watched as a kid, but couldn't remember the name of. He
remembered the same cartoon, but also couldn't remember the name of
it.

As a direct result of that conversation, I spent much of yesterday
trying to figure out what that cartoon was. I finally posted a
question about it on my blog, and our own Banana Muncher replied
with some links. One of these led me to the name of the show:
Barbapapa. A google search led me to a quiz that tells you which
Barbapapa you are: http://quizilla.com/users/barbaquiz/quizzes/Which%
20Barbapapa%20Personality%20Are%20You%3F/

Made small: http://tinyurl.com/54ncn

I'm Barbatine.

Now onto the QP:

1. What was your favorite cartoon growing up?

2. What is your favorite cartoon now?

3. Who is your favorite cartoon hero?

4. Who is your favorite cartoon villain?

5. Did you watch Barbapapa?

6. If you took the quiz, which Barbapapa are you?

1. What was your favorite cartoon growing up?
Bullwinkle, followed by Underdog and the Go Go Gophers (whose names,
for you trivia buffs, were Chief Ruffled Feather and Running Board).
Post by yatcher-/
2. What is your favorite cartoon now?
Ugh! I am tortured ad nauseum with Rugrats, Spongebob, and Fairly
Oddparents so much that I've become intolerant of most cartoons. The
Simpsons are still pretty funny, and I like watching the Animaniacs
(although I think they're mostly in sindication now).
Post by yatcher-/
3. Who is your favorite cartoon hero?
There's no need to fear, UNDERDOG is here!!

4. Who is your favorite cartoon villain?
Boris Badenov and Natasha Fatalle.
Post by yatcher-/
5. Did you watch Barbapapa?
Nope, never heard of it.

6. If you took the quiz, which Barbapapa are you?
It was a silly survey, full of choices that were not applicable. In
the end it says that I am Barbibul, which I'm sure it picked because
my favorite color is blue.

1. What was your favorite cartoon growing up?

-----I have always been crazy for cartoons, especially the Saturday morning
variety. 6am to at least noon was golden every Saturday, and Sundays had
some gems also. So choosing just one would be impossible. I will try to
toss out the first three that come to mind.

1) anything SuperFriends. Especially Challenge of the SuperFriends,
which featured the Legion of Doom.

2) Rocky and Bullwinkle. Although I might have favored Underdog a little
when young, and in college I went through a big Roger Ramjet phase. But
Moose and Squirrel stick with me.

3) Johnny Quest. Those walking eye-ball things are still wandering
around my memories. Honorable mention to Speed Racer.

2. What is your favorite cartoon now?

----Again, impossible to say. Three that pop into my head.

1) Home Movies. Loved this show and still waiting for season 2 to
come out on DVD. (And Futurama, the other cancelled great cartoon, although
it is completely out on DVD now)

2) Justice League/Justice League Unlimited. Like Batman and Superman
before this, it is always nice to see super-heroes done right. (Teen Titans
was also well done, as was X-Men Evolutions and almost the MTV Spider-man.)

3) SpongeBob. Can't help it. The little guy is cute.

3. Who is your favorite cartoon hero?

-----I think I would have to say Space Ghost, since he wasn't originally a
comic book character, that costume by Alex Toth was brilliant, he may have
hung out with the Herculoids (with Gloop and Gleep, two of my favorite
blobs), and as an added bonus, you could play Space Ghost with your friends,
by taking Slurpee cups, punching out the bottoms, and sliding them onto your
wrists like his power bands (although slurpee cups may be plastic now, so
that might be more difficult)

4. Who is your favorite cartoon villain?

-----Cartoon villains many times aren't as good, because they don't want to
make them the way they should be. The Joker, while better now and voiced
wonderfully by Marc Hammil, still isn't menacing enough. And that is
probably because they don't want a sosiopathic killer on a 'kids' show.
But.

1) Malificent has always won my heart in the spooky category. And
what a great reason to want to kill our heroine; because you weren't invited
to a party!

2) The Monarch from the Venture Bros. Not sure why.

3) Gargamel from the Smurfs. Hated the Smurfs, so I was really
rooting for him to win.

5. Did you watch Barbapapa?

-----never watched it, although the characters look familiar. Where they
used for greeting cards and stuff?

6. If you took the quiz, which Barbapapa are you?

-----Barbidur, the sporty one, apparently. I think they based this on my
color preference alone, as my other answers don't reflect this. Well,
alright, I did answer that I wanted a Zamboni, but c'mon, who doesn't?

(:8())

----by the way, what about those live action shows on Saturday Mornings.
Arc II, SHAZAM/Isis, Land of the Lost with the creepy Sleestaks, and all the
others. I really got into those for a while when I was a kid, and no one
seems to remember them anymore.Well, land of the lost and SHAZAM/Isis yes,
but Arc II and Jason of Star Command?

Space Nuts (Lunch, not Launch), and the Bugaloos.

OMG!

You are the first person I have run into who remembers The Lost Saucer.
People look at me like I am insane when I mention the Chickaphant (and its
baby, the Elechick, if I recall)

I have been sorely tempted to get a DVD of ElectraWoman and DynaGirl, and of
Isis (SHAZAM didn't really do it for me, for some reason) Were you aware
that they thought about bringing back ElectraWoman and DynaGirl with Markie
Post playing ElectraWoman? Want to see that unaired pilot.

Bugaloos didn't do much for me, but I was a fan of Lidsville. Another show
that people looked at me like I was crazy when I would mention it, but I
found them on DVD and on a T-Shirt so now they know I am not crazy. Now if
I could just get the voices to stop saying that I am still crazy. But I
digress.

Do you remember the Krofft Super Show with Kaptain Kool and the Kongs? Or
the sappy Kids Are People Too, which spawned Alex and Annie? (or the
uber-cute The Secret Life of Waldo Kitty?)

Sorry, nostalgia banks went into overdrive there for a moment.

Sorry, nostalgia banks went into overdrive there for a moment.
If you can remember this, you will be the first ever:

I used to watch a cartoon after school in the 70's. It was from Japan, and
featured a kid, his friend/girlfriend (a mermaid), a dolphin (Splasher), a
Professor-type who made inventions to defeat the bad guys, and his Dad, who
was the head of an underwater ocean security agency (Dad had a way cool
job!), but it was always this kid who saved the day. It was an underwater
Johnny Quest-esque show. He was able to breath underwater by chewing special
gum (oxy-gum) and he had jet propellers in his boot heels. He wore a red
wetsuit and had a folding sonic boomerang that worked underwater. He had a
submarine with a special chute he could swim in and out of.

What was the name of the show (no fair Googling for it)?

Thanks,
Dave

Marine Boy, the kid with no real name (always was called Marine boy, but dad
sometimes called him "Son"). I used to love that show. No one remembers it
though, it was great. One of these days, the world will remember and someone
will sell a DVD of all Marine Boy episodes. I can hardly wait.

It was great how they would go back and forth from real problems to
imaginary ones, and Waldo would learn from his imagining to be Tarzan, the
Lone Ranger, whoever. I loved it. It validated my lust for reading, and
didn't make me feel weird for always doing pretty much exactly what Waldo
did (spend most of my time in imaginary places).

Ahhh those were the days. What the hell was the name of that horse
thing in Lost Saucer? Nevermind, I looked it up, "The Dorse". "The
Bugaloos, the Bugaloos, here and there and everywhere... flying high,
flying loose, flying free as something something be". I loved HR
Puff'n'Stuff too. The people who made that and Lidsville were into
mushrooms, acid or something. I can't believe we watched some of that
stuff. I grew to hate Sigmund the Sea Monster.

Anyone remember that there used to be "Preview" shows for Saturday
cartoons prior to the new season in September? Saturday cartoons were IT
back then.

Also one of my faves later on was Flash Gordon and later yet (I was in
high school by then) Thundarr the Barbarian. In college it was Danger
Mouse and then Thunder Cats. But just to date myself, I grew up with Under
Dog, the moose and squirrel, Fractured Fairy Tales. I still have vague
memories of Kimba the White Lion and watched Speed Racer religiously as a
kindergartener. I even remember those horribly animated Marvel hero
cartoons, "When Captain America throws his mighty shield, all those who
oppose his mighty shield must yield, for the red and the white and the blue
come through"... or something like that. I'd probably have to pick Scooby
Doo as my favorite from those years tho.

Huge amounts of mind-altering chemicals were consumed on the Kids-TV lots in
the 70's. They used to bring in the mescaline by the trainload, I'm
guessing.

Thundercats. No, G.I. Joe. Err, Transformers. MASK! Voltron.
Robotech. etc. etc. etc.

2. What is your favorite cartoon now?
(animated series) The wife and I are currently working our way through
Ghost in the Shell Standalone Complex season 1 on DVD. Good stuff. I
LOVED Lain, though. The wife's enjoying Haibane Renmei, as well. For
crazy fun, Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi takes the cake. And for
pure craziness, FLCL. Stateside, Batman (and Gargoyles) really wowed
me back in the 90's.

(movie) Nearly everything I've seen from Studio Ghibi has been
